Day 19: SPED Centers

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

We visited the Special Education (SPED) Centers both high school and elementary level. In the Philippines, SPED is the school for children with disabilities. My first time to visit one was during college which was part of our School Psychology exposure. Even though, I'm still very excited because now, I learned more words in the Filipino Sign Language compared before - I only knew A-Z.

We played the "Elephant game" and the "Find the Leader" with the high school students. They so love to play. Later, I taught them break claps 1-5 and the Boom Snap Clap which is a famous hand game in SSEAYP ( A Youth Diplomatic Exchange Program for ASEAN countries and Japan).

After the interaction, we went to the Deaf Elementary Level to also observe them. I introduced myself to the children saying "My name is "H-A-N-D-S-O-M-E" and I was expecting them to laugh at that joke but I guess some of them didn't really get it or worst - I'm just so corny.

Some of the Elementary deaf students were still learning how to sign A-Z. Personally, I find it hard for this kids to learn more without any family support. I just wished that parents would also take their time to learn sign language for them to communicate better with their deaf child especially in school learning.
