Day 17: GVSP and CAD Community Welcome to ICS Volunteers

Sunday, March 3, 2013

We had a short Filipino Sign Language Lesson at 1:00-2:00 PM before the community welcome. Its a very enriching day to add more words in our vocabulary that will surely be very helpful when we start going to our work placements.

We were reminded of the saving signs which included:  Again, Slowly, Stop, Wait, Sign and Finger Spell.

A brief introduction took place that included the Board of Directors of GVSP coming from the different sectors in Cebu City. Some of them were:

President Richard Roylan - Working in Southwestern University
Secretary Easter Concha -  DSWS Head of Cebu City
Treasurer Chairel - Head of Children's and Women's Desk
Joe Luna - Working in a Radio Station
John Paul Maunes- Program Manager of GVSP

Janice and Michelle from Cebu Association of the Deaf will be our Volunteer Placement Supervisor. I look forward to work with them for the next 2 months.

We had some fun interaction with the deaf community in the Mission for the Deaf compound. Every Sunday, they gather to talk and watch basketball. I still find it hard to remember their names and sign names. But, to understand them more means to immerse yourself into their world. It's not just enough to peek - you have to experience it. It might not even enough to experience - you must also do it as well.
